The Hingis Curse

Ah, Jon Wertheim, tennis writer for Sports Illustrated and tennis pundit for USA's US Open coverage... In a rundown of tennis topics yesterday, he brought up the "Hingis Curse," which as everyone knows is the career death spiral that allegedly befalls any male athlete who dates Martina Hingis. The Swiss Miss does seem to have sunk the tennis pros she has dated, but Wertheim tossed golfer Sergio Garcia into the mix, as well, saying that before Hingis he was supposed to be a rival to Tiger Woods, but after...

Well, what, exactly? True, Sergio hasn't won a major, but he has been a stalwart for the European Davis Cup team over the years (something Tiger has not been for the US side), and he has certainly threatened at several majors. As for the overall career, he's won 12 times worldwide and has earned almost $16 million in official money on the PGA TOUR. In seven years. And he is, ahem... 26 years old. Some downward career spiral. He should be around on both the PGA and European tours until 2030. And he'll probably win The Masters before this decade is over.

Sergio must lay awake at night nursing Michelobs and wishing he had never spoken to Hingis while he ponders his bank balance and tries to decide whether he should buy another Ferrari.
